SNL QVC

I'm gonna miss these political gems after the election is over.  Here is Sarah Palin (wink) and John McCain (for reals) on QVC.  They said they couldn't afford three major networks like Obama, so they had to do it on the cheap.  Best line: "I'm on QVC because I'm a true maverick, a Republican without any money."

Worlds Llargest Democracy Bans Pornography
Written by Jon Kehoe

I wonder if those MPAA guys who are after K. Smith are secretly Indonesian Muslims.

Indonesia today (Thursday) was expected to pass what some regarded as the most wide-ranging anti-pornography bill ever enacted. According to the Jakarta Post, the bill defines pornography as "man-made sexual materials either in the forms of drawings, sketches, illustrations, photographs, texts, voices, sound, moving pictures, animations, cartoons, poetry, conversations, gestures, or other forms of communicative messages through various kinds of media and or performances in front of the public, which may incite sexual desire and or violate moral ethics in the community." Opponents of the bill have noted that it would bar not only the screening of most Hollywood films but those from most other countries as well. Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim nation.

"conversations, gestures..."???  J wouldn't make it there for five seconds.  Remind me to never go to Indonesia.

Possibly the Best Show Ever

NIN's new tour sounds like it could be the best concert performance ever.  Always a technology freak, Trent has come up with an unusual assortment of devices that make the set appear to come alive.  If he decides to tour somewhere in the Chicago area I'm up for attending.  Read about the show at Wired.

Stop Comcast
Written by Jon Kehoe

Comcast has been known to limit or cut off Internet to customers with little or no warning.  They claim it is because of usage, which is highly suspect because other Internet providers have stated they have no need to cut Internet access for any of their customers based on usage.  Comcasts is one of America's largest cable providers and they need to evolve with customer's internet needs or face the consequences.

The FCC's Internet Policy Statement essentially states that consumers are entitled to access all applications, services and content of their choice.

Comcasst have been caught in the past by the FCC for blocking access to certain websites which compete with companies in which they hold stock (Ie: their video on demand service).  If they are allowed to limit the Internet now, it will not stop there.  When people speak out in dissatisfaction, corporations listen.  Even if you don't have Comcast, pass this on.

The freedom inherent in the Internet is symbolic of out basic American freedom.  Please pass this on.

My Next Camera

The just released D90 from Nikon is going to be my next camera.  It not only shoots 12 mega-pixel still images but can shoot 24 fps 720p HD (1280 x 720 pixels) video too.  Wow!  A video camera with interchangeable lenses for less than a thousand dollars.  It opens up a lot of creative territory since I already have an assortment of lenses.  I can't wait to do an HD video documentary on insects.  Check out the specs here.

Recommendation

I never thought I would say this but if you haven't downloaded service pack 3 for Windows XP yet, you should.  Even though this "upgrade" probably put spy ware and drm on my computer, the update is worth it because XP is much faster now.  I read where this service pack could add up to 15% performance boost but at certain tasks, the improvement seems much more than 15%.  This new, much faster XP is just another reason that I don't see Vista in my future.

2008 Olympics A Sham
Written by P3chez
Thursday, 14 August 2008 19:26

If you have been watching any of the 2008 Olympics you may already be aware that those events which are judged by humans are a real joke.  I don't think that I've seen such biased judging since the cold war.  For example, during a boxing match the other night, the Chinese favorite was nearly knocked out by some Lithuanian guy and was clearly stunned, but no points were awarded to the "unknown" opponent.  I would think that if you nearly knock your opponent out you should be awarded at least one point but the judges didn't think so and handed the bout to the Chinese guy.

Diving is suspicious as well.  As I was watching synchronize diving the other evening I noticed that one dive done by a Chinese duo was awarded 10 by several judges but the replay showed that the pair were not perfectly synchronized.  When the Russian divers pulled off a very similar performance they were awarded only 8s.  After that, the Chinese divers never scored higher than a  6.5 on the Russian judge's scorecard although the other judges routinely gave them 9s.  Objectivity?  Obviously not.

It's gotten so that the only sports that I am interested in are those that involve some kind of objective measurement like who touched the wall first or who threw what the farthest.  Given the power of computers and video technology I see no reason why the human element cannot be eliminated from all Olympic events.  A computer can determine how "perfect" a dive was by comparing a frame by frame video image with a pre-programmed set of perfection parameters.  The winner would be decided by determining who was closest to the perfect dive.  I think that this technique could also be applied to gymnastics and even boxing.  A high speed camera aimed at each fighters head could record each punch and based on how much and how quickly the victims head moves the computer could calculate the force imparted by each blow.  The boxer who has the least force applied to his head should win.

And while they're at it, Olympic software developers should write a program to replace Dick Button.

NIN free album
Written by Jon Kehoe
Wednesday, 23 July 2008 17:40

slip Probably old news to most of you.  Just when I was going to download this album as a torrent I saw it was available for free on the NIN website.  (J might have mentioned this already)  Gotta love it.  All musicians should do this.  They will make a ton of dough off of the concerts and fans who buy the physical albums for collections.

Maybe someday corporations will learn.  DIY forever.

At the bottom of the download page is Mike's favorite line.

"all files are 100% DRM-free."

Like Dorothy in "The Wizard of Oz", I have discovered that there's no place like home.  Yes, Nowakfilms has returned to it's .com roots and has moved back to the old web host provider.  I've yet again learned that the grass only looks greener on the other side.

I'm still in the process of transitioning everything so if something doesn't work please let me know but in the meantime, enjoy the much better performance.

Gene Simmons Blames Fans Too
Written by P3chez
Thursday, 19 June 2008 18:09

Gene Simmons blames the fans and file sharing for the demise of the record industry.  Here's a quote from a Billboard story a couple of months back,

"Every little college kid, every freshly-scrubbed little kid's face should have been sued off the face of the earth."
But wait.  It's not all bad news.  This is what he said just the other day.
"The record industry is dead. It's six feet underground and unfortunately the fans have done this, They've decided to download and file share. There is no record industry around so we're going to wait until everybody settles down and becomes civilized. As soon as the record industry pops its head up we'll record new material."
YAY!  No more kiss.  The record industry will never be what it once was so it looks like we won't be suffering through any "new" material from those bozos.  Who knows?  Maybe Simmons will have to tour or something to pay for his face lift.  The photo shows Gene just after having had his cosmetic surgery which was apparently recorded for his "Osbournes"-like television show.  I can't wait to miss it.

Comic Books Strike Back
Written by Jon Kehoe
Sunday, 08 June 2008 09:55

A grumpy old Entertainment Weekly columnist with tunnel vision gets his history wrong and tries to take on comic book movies.  There are a lot of things wrong with the studios that crank out one superhero after the next, but it definitely has nothing to do with what this guys bitching about.  After bitching for ten paragraphs about how summer movies were so much better before Spiderman he finally lets you know that he hates comic books....  WHY THE HELL IS HE WRITING THIS ARTICLE??!!!  OR, IF HE HATES COMICS, WHY IS HE SEEING THE MOVIES IN THE FIRST PLACE??!!  Its funny how he ignores all of the summer movie trash that has come before and used mostly panned comic book movies in his article.  Why does this guy have a job?

His article:  http://www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20203168,00.html
